Why I give 5-star b/c price/performance = $373 (Refurbished) / Cameras, DVR, Firmware, Software, network, 500GB HDD, 22" LCD Monitor; I tracked the price on eBay it was $509 (item 230778441694)
Wiring is headache
Camera Image quality - if you used $10,000 Nikon lens plus $5,000 Nikon Camera, of course, you will not happy with the image quality, per my wife opinion - clear, but for total $373 ,I will say it is OK, you can make your judge here ([...], side-by-side images comparison with my cheap camera )

Re-played video is about 95% area of a real-time-display

Cons:
IR Camera judges all night in motion status, so record all junk at night; I tried the wireless camera, but it was noise (power supply cause, wires must be shielded), 24 hours motion detected if wireless;
IR camera not put behind the window glass - all to see are LEDs reflection
Because the camera motion detect complete wrong so I try used my grand-mother Reporter RW300 as alarm input to record motion video at night. Called both companies technical supports, every one ask me call opposite vender. The Reporter Alarm company said - it is too old, it will not work to any DVR; I ask Samsung alarm input schematic (answer: no), ask if the alarm input has the pull-up resistor to the 12V (answer: do not know), only message I can get is maximum current is 2A for the alarm input. I just connect the two together with Reporter RW300 COM jump to GROUND; it works, but must in buzz status.

For starters, no problems so far....but its a bit scary to see nearly 1/4 of referb products on the market. After checking back on the product to see how others rated it, it also dropped about a hundo...SOB!

back to the product.....
So far its been a pretty neat toy. took me about a month to crawl through the attic, figure out how to place the cameras in non-obvious places, and to mount the monitor on the wall.

Install: really easy for DIY's. a dummy couldn't screw it up. only issue was the lack of cord. 60ft will not wrap around the attic from one end of my house to the other. I was able to purchase anohter for 40ish and connect it to another 60ft wire with everything working ok.
*one camera was less than 5ft away from where the monitor was. Would have been nice to find shorter length wires to make me feel better by not wasting the other 50ft and a few extra bucks.

Cams: I don't have any other comparison since this is my first and only for personal use. The quality seems decent. The system can hold a 'max' frame rate that is a 'give and take' method (meaning if you had a front door camera that you want to focus on, the others can be 'downgraded' for compensation.) Don't expect a facial recognition after 10ft...but i can tell which one of my friends were coming up to my house during testing.
During night time use, its basically a black and white type of feed with a green haze on objects. its not very detailed, but it'll give you a general picture of what's going on and who's doing it. The infra-red lights kick on at dusk and somewhat low lights. this really sucks if you are trying to conceal the cameras because the 20red lights around the camera lens are really obvious when looked directly at. I snuck most of my cameras under the eves of the roof, which limited the area of view, but would catch a good glimpse of un-knowers walking by. One camera was placed next to a motion censored light, so the camera will kick into color mode when somebody comes to the door for color definition.

Monitor: pretty neato. it has a on/off is a button less touch spot that i overlooked for awhile. it comes with a wireless remote that will do basic stuff, but the USB mouse makes any operation MUCH easier.

System thoughts: A word of warning, video taped sections can't be deleted!!! you must re-set the system to clear it all off, i guess its a good feature for small biz owners wanting to keep overall tabs on a place. It has a password protected access...but anybody with a brain could reach in the back and click the off button. I bought the 1TB version which looks like it will hold 2 years of info......jeebus! Looking back on my purchase I don't think anybody will have a need for that much time storage.
it has the option to save clips of sessions you want to store on a USB(never tried it yet)
- does not have a DVi connection (only the blue connection) sucks for somebody wanting to double it as a monitor with the newer connections.

Fun notes: I have a 350VA back-up battery surge protector I originally purchased for my computer (but ended up buying a faster laptop that wont need it) and now use the back up battery for the security camera system only. Under daylight operations +1 one camera in the garage using the IF night lights. I was able to run 4 cameras for a hour! take that sneeky burglars trying to kill the power to potentially steal my shiznat!!! (hopefully they can't tract my amazon account to my address n read this) my wireless router is a juice sucker, so im guessing if i ever used the battery+internet modem...it might last 20min.

Features I plan on trying:
-syncing it somehow to an iphone
-connect Cable TV to it so i can show others its just a tv
-sync it to a backup to a hidden NAS, just n case a thief wants to steal the 'monitor' ;)

3 mionths later....

-1 TB will only supply 3 weeks of 24hr recording. LAME! once it fills up you have the option to overwite old data...or just stop working.
So it was time to set up motion sensor, A+ for these settings. The DVR technically 'always records', but once motion is detected it will 'save the record' from 1min to 5seconds (up to your decision) before the motion was triggered, just in case it may have missed something before the camera noticed something. i am now on 3 months of tid bit recordings,
-you can set up the motion detection area so trees blowing in the wind won't 'trigger' it's motion.
-the mount I bought got in the way of some vid cam connections when screwed in. Took me about 10min to grind out a bid enough chunk with a bench grinder. not a hard task, but still annoying.

- One of the cameras had a 1/4 section of IF lights go out, dont know if its covered per camera...but Samsung better honor a one camera return over the whole system replacement( or some crazy old man fist shaking will happen). Hope the... Read more

This IS the New BCT15X with 9000 Channels as the other reviewer, H. French's "Amazon Surfer" said, not an older model. By the ways thanks for the review, I too, almost didn't purchase this scanner from Amazon for fear that this was an older stock model but now I'm glad that I did. Thanks again H. French for the info. It was shipped quickly and well packaged by Amazon, although Uniden also packages the unit in its own box pretty good too. No damage!

This thing is a brick! Very Heavy! I'm just using it in my Office/ Computer Room, so the heavier the better for me. I also purchased the TRENDnet USB to Serial Converter TU-S9 (Blue)to hook up the scanner to the computer in order to program it. I would NEVER EVER try to program this thing without a computer. If you don't plan on hooking this Scanner up to a computer, I wouldn't get it if I were you.

I also downloaded and installed the FreeScan Software to Control and Program the BCT15X, this is a free program and does pretty much everything the average user could need, and the best part is it's FREE! the Website is ScanNow.org Did I mention it's Free!

I then went to the Radio Reference Website, went to their database and found the Motorola Trunked Frequencies and Talkgroups for my City/County and Copy/Pasted those into the FreeScan Software, Uploaded it to the Scanner via the USB to Serial Cable and Shazaam I'm listening to my local PD/Sheriff/Fire Dept. and others. You can also Register for their pay service and easily download a data file, but I chose to do it the hard way(copy/paste it into FreeScan), which really wasn't that hard.

I opened the box at 6pm, hooked up the power, antenna, Installed the Driver for the USB to Serial Cable. Downloaded and Installed the FreeScan software, Went to the Radio Reference website, copy pasted the Freq/Talkgroups into Freescan and was listening by 8pm.

This Scanner sounds great too, so much better than my Old handheld Radio Shack Pro-92, which since FCC Rebanding the trunking hasn't worked. The BCT15X Audio is loud and clear, scanning is quick, display looks great.

The only thing I don't like about this scanner is that there is not a printed manual with it, just the PDF file on the CD. I didn't think this would be a big deal, and thought the other reviewers were just being cry babies for bringing up this issue. But now I see their point, it would be very helpful to have at least some basic printed manual for quick reference.

I will Update this Review later as I just received it less than 3 hours ago.

This is a very nice scanner with alot of features,up to 9000 channels stored in groups instead of banks, fire tone out, band scope etc. The biggest drawback is no printed manual. I agree with the other review, that this is very inconvienient.UNIDEN gives you a CD with instructions, which means your chained to your desk, or you have to lug a laptop around all the time.I use this scanner in my vehical, so it would have been nice to have a manual to keep in the glove box for quik reference. To find alot of the things you need to know requires going through many menus and sub-menus, and once you do find what your looking for, you had better remember where you found it, because there are so many menus it's easy to get lost. I wish UNIDEN would at least offer a manual that we could purchase for a few bucks, though after paying 220.00 for the scanner we shouldn't have to. Would have given 5 stars otherwise.

I think this scanner is a great scanner. For the features that it has and for the price it is well worth it. I have several Uniden scanners and this one is the tops for features. Have had this scanner for several weeks now and am still trying to figure out all the features. You have to use this scanner to get the "feel" of everything it does. Mine is mounted at fingers length away on my radio console in my vehicle where I can just easily press buttons while I am driving. You need to be able to access this radio to capture frequencies and program on the fly. I have been and electronic technician for over 50 years and owned lots of radios and this one is a winner. Now for the bad news, the programming sucks. The manual on disk sucks and even the guys trying to tell you an easier way still leave things to be desired. Like one reviewer said it is frustrating, yes it is but get through that and it is a great radio. Oh the only bad thing I can say for Amazon is they could pad the radio when they ship it to you. Mine came in a box just the same size as the radio originally came in and that was it not one piece of paper more to pad it. So since it came through the mail it has been shock tested before I got it. Uniden makes a good product or I would have had screws loose inside the radio if it wasn't. Remember now this is not a digital capable scanner, so if you want that feature you will need to spend the extra bucks. This one does do narrow band and am/fm etc.
I would have given it 5 stars except for the programming and the packing issues.

Could I be dreaming? Is this really true for this price? All these features with a touch screen? Long and the short of it is this is an amazing breakthrough in digital scanners at this price point! I am a news videographer who has worked in many different markets for various stations and has had a number of different scanners through the years. The Home Patrol 1 beats many of them hands down from both a pro and amateur level. Yes the unit needs some work but I expected that as this is such a new product.

The Pros: Right out of the box you can set it up to work via zipcode, city, GPS(need the proper connection), or area (the HP1 automatically picks up what signals are in the area). These methods work extremely well right out of the box but do have some issues which I'll get to in the Cons section.

For this price it comes with everything, home AND car charger, preloaded frequencies, stand and software all in a touch screen package. Hands down this can't be beat.

The touch screen is brilliant and relatively easy to navigate. Set brightness, auto dim, contrast and power save to your liking and your off.

Having all the frequencies preloaded on a 2gig micro SD card is great also Plus the fact that Uniden updates the list on a regular basis which is taken care of just by plugging the unit into the computer and hitting update in the software.

Squelch, attenuation, range, inputting frequencies, favorites, gps connection and yes even recording are all here.

The In Between: My understanding is that Uniden knows about these problems and are working on fixing them.

While having the ability to set zipcode, range, area etc. is fantastic the unit gets a bit confused and leads to excessive work out of the box. I put my zipcode in and it loaded states that were over two hours away. Same thing with entering range, I set it for 15 miles and it loads frequencies from over forty miles away. So then you have to work on locking out channels left and right.

You can set up what you want to listen to such as fire, police, transportation, rail, etc. but the problem is even with certain departments chosen it will just load everything up. For example all I wanted was police, fire and ems yet it loaded up rail, airports and transportation anyway.

Again Uniden knows about these problems and is working on them.

The Bad or Nitpicky: Being able to save favorites in the unit is a good thing to have but to make an entire list is a giant time consuming pain and your much better off making a list in the software which leads me to the next problem. The software is easy to navigate but has little to no instruction on creating and saving your lists to the unit. I figured it out and once figured out it is a snap but a little instruction would go a long way. In fact entering and saving frequencies in the software is easier than entering them in the unit itself.

The touch screen is a giant step forward but needs some tweeks. I like seeing County, Department, Frequency etc. and be able to one touch lock but to skip a channel requires a three touch process on the tiny bar on the right which while driving can be a pain. This needs to be a one button step like on other handhelds.

The squelch feature is great to have but on the other handheld units you have more finite control with a turn type knob.

Overall a fantastic scanner for the money, it really can't be beat. Yes there are some nitpicky issues but Uniden is working on addressing them and once addressed will make the Home Patrol 1 THE unit to have. Uniden needs to come out with the car mount like they said they were going to three months ago.

I'm in a small city in New Mexico and I'm sure that this scanner works perfectly in Dallas or even Albuquerque but it doesn't work where I am. The advertisements state that when you type in your zip code or city you can begin listening to fire, police, emergency transmissions etc. Unfortunately the transmissions come from a database and if your local police, fire, etc. frequencies aren't in the data base you hear nothing at all. The unit looks like you are scanning - Police, railroads, etc. but it never stops.
I'd advise contacting Uniden before investing in this expensive unit if you are in a small town or city.

The Uniden Home Patrol-1 is an amazing piece of technology. A touch screen scanner that requires very little user input, and has the entire US frequency database in its memory. For the most part, the HP-1 make scanning as simple as can be. You hook up the scanner to your PC, and run the Uniden Sentinel Software. The software downloads the latest frequency database from RadioReference. You upload the the database to the scanner, and you're good to go. Just enter your Zip Code, City, or GPS coordinates, and the HP-1 will scan all the agencies in your area. You can even hook up an optional GPS unit to automatically follow your location. You set the range of the scanner from 0-30 miles to limit how far away the agencies are that the scanner will attempt to scan. You can also select the type of agencies you wish to listen to. I find the "location" setting to be hit or miss. It seems to think that towns that are 40 miles from me, are actually less than 1 mile from me. It also thinks agencies in my own town are more than 10 miles away. This is due to the database, not the scanner. The database has been getting updated on a daily basis, to get it more accurate and up to date. I find that setting up your own "Favorites Lists" works well in listening to what you want to.

As for the hardware itself, the HP-1 is a very solid performer. The receiver has great sensitivity and selectivity. I've listened to APCO-25 digital systems, EDACS, and Motorola analog trunking systems. All of them were configured correctly without any user input. Audio quality is good, but not great. It is about what I expected from a very small speaker. The small SMA duck antenna performs surprisingly well, especially on UHF. The touch screen is bright and easy to use. Battery life with the included 2300mAh batteries is good. I get over 8 hours on a single charge. The scanner is capable of replaying and recording transmissions. A very cool feature. The scanner also comes with a home charger/adapter, car charger/adapter, and home stand. The stand is a nice touch. The HomePatrol-1 is a nice addition to my collection of scanners. People that don't like to program their scanners, or would like to use it in different areas, will probably enjoy it also.
